Major Quake in Japan

This just in.

7.3 Quake

Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) A magnitude 7.3 quake struck south of Japan in the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on Friday.

The USGS said the quake struck at 5:31 a.m. on Saturday (2031 GMT on Friday) 52 miles east of Naha, on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa.

The quake, only 18 miles below the seabed, was large enough to trigger at least a tsunami in nearby areas but there was no immediate warning
.

Considering the Haiti quake was only 7.0, this is pretty big.

Hopefully, loss of life will be minimal.

That is unfortunate for Japan. I wonder what F'ing nut job will say it was us with our earthquake machine?

8.8-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Central Chile

Quote:
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica. It said a tsunami could also hit Hawaii later in the day, the Associated Press reported.

That is more than 800 times stronger than the Haiti quake.

They seem to be too far apart as to be even tenuously connected, but..........one has to wonder.

I'm not sure the Haiti quake would be classified as being part of the ring of fire.

As I understand it, one quake doesn't set another one off thousands of miles away........ unless they're part of the same plate system.

Having lived in Alaska for over 30 years, I felt a lot of quakes. Although we were 4 years late for the big one in 1964, there was still a lot of destruction that could be seen from it.
