So how much are we going to give Haiti?

I really can't stand when a natural disaster happens. We go out of our way to spend millions on their relief aid and no other country tries to even come close to match it. There are many countries that can easily match it but we're the stupid ones that have to top everyone so we keep them on our sides.

I really mean no offense to anyone from any country that has received aid from the US. I just really hate to see people walking the streets here with nowhere to live when we're handing money to other countries.

Just ranting. It happens all too often. The way Obama just hand sout money, we'll make them the second richest nation in the western hemisphere.

A tropical island and they are the poorest around. WTF!!! Ditch the government and start fresh.

That is a terrible situation. I do hope we can help them in some form. 3 million people and less than 1 thousand hospital beds available.

Unfortunate you guys feel that way. Helping those in need is part of what makes this country great. No need to politicize that.

Now, that said I whole heartedly agree there is much more than can be done here to help our own.

A co-worker of mine works for Texas Task Force 1 and she was notified that they are sending California and another states Task Force team down there to help with the search and they are leaving today. She isn't going to go cause Texas isn't a national team, only here in the states. Relief efforts are already started from the US.

I do belive in helping others but I also feel as if we have way to much work to be done in this country before we go abroad and save the world. The older I get the more I dont understand who appointed the US as the worlds police. If there is a world conflict we are involved, natural disaster we are there too. I just think we would be a whole lot better off if we could tend to our own issues first. Just my opinion of course.

Well said!

I would like to add to it. The way we do typically help other countries doesn't always go to the people. There are many ways we can improve how aid and money get to the citizens of those countries, rather than to the governments. Often times it does turn political, unfortunately.

My theory is that we shouldn't be a country that just gives, but rather we should change into a country that helps others fend for themselves. The idea of "Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for a lifetime." All we end up doing is throwing money hoping problems go away.

Don't worry, Obama apologized today & said that this is America's fault & America will fix everything & even those who have lost jobs, homes & are living in homeless shelters due to obamaics need to give money to Haiti......

Re: So how much are we going to give Haiti?

I'm curious because I don't really know, but in recent disaster type events that have happened in the U.S. have we received help from any other countries? We have not had a totally devastating event such as other countries have had, but we have had a few things.

I know our country is viewed differently, so people tend to expect the top country to help, but like the OP said there are countries capable of helping the way we do. So would we expect to see the same type of help if something similar happened to us? Or would we be SOL since we are the ones that help when something happens?
