Thousands Line Up For Stimulus Money
Stimulus Money Available For Low-Income, Homeless Detroit Residents

POSTED: Tuesday, October 6, 2009
UPDATED: 3:04 pm EDT October 6, 2009

DETROIT -- Thousands of people have lined up Tuesday for a chance at millions of stimulus dollars set aside to help Detroit's homeless and low-income residents.

The money is available to help low-income residents from becoming homeless and homeless residents to find housing.

Some people in line falsely believed they were registering for $3,000 stimulus checks from the Obama Administration.

City officials told Local 4 that Detroit was granted $15 million to help residents pay bills and their rent or find temporary housing for the homeless.

The remaining 5,000 applications can be picked up Wednesday at the Cobo Hall in the Riverview Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Already filled out applications can be submitted at the Cobo Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or sent in the mail to the Detroit Planning and Development Department at 65 Cadillac Square, Suite 1400, Detroit, MI., 48226.

Applications must be postmarked by Oct. 7.

Application Guidelines

To qualify, a person must have been a resident of Detroit for more than six months, must be homeless or facing eviction and must be able to maintain housing after receiving assistance.

Also, a resident must make 50 percent less than the median area income, which would be less than $24,850 for single Detroit residents and less than $35,500 for a family of four.

No mortgage assistance will be available through this program.

Once applications are reviewed, only applicants eligible for funding assistance will receive notification from a service provider.

While free for them, I get to bend over and grab my ankles for my money. Then the gov't helps me redistribute it. Isn't that sweet?

If they put the money in the bottom of a work boot to see who would get it..none of them would.

Re: Hope and Change caught on Video

Does anyone see any thing in common here?? Bunch of lazy motherF!!ckers! At least make them clean up their city for a paycheck. I have personally called the mayors office, city hall, clercks office, board of commissioners; (multiple times) looking for permission to help clean up down there. Abandoned houses and lots. Lots piled 15 feet high with scrap. I was given the circle jerk on the phone. It would take a crew over 10 years to clean that sh!thole up. (or more)
They dont want to work. Its easier to stand in line and beg for a handout. Makes me want to puke. If they need help with housing, give them a hammer and some nails. If they need food, give them a .22 and a box of shells. Im having a hard enough time scraping by as it is. It pisses me off seeing my tax dollars pissed away. At least make them work for it.
I dont mind helping people that try to help themselves. But they sure as f!!ck arent trying to hard. Enjoy your 15 million dollar handout you pieces of sh!t!! Keep it up obama, Im watching you.

And more:

You have to love this line from this story: "Rumors that $3,000 stimulus checks from the Obama administration spurred heavy turnouts."

DETROIT — Scuffles erupted as thousands of Detroiters jockeyed, pushed and shoved Wednesday to get free money being offered to only 3,500 of the city's recently or soon to be homeless.

Several received medical treatment for fainting or exhaustion while frantically trying to obtain the applications for federal assistance. The long lines and short tempers highlighted the frustration and desperation that Detroiters feel struggling through an economic nightmare.

The line around downtown's Cobo Center started forming well before daybreak. Anger flared within a few hours as more people sought out a dwindling number of applications for the program.

Members of the Detroit Police Department's Gang Squad and other tactical units were called in for crowd control. Several people reportedly passed out from exhaustion and had to be treated by emergency medical personnel. Some minor injuries were reported, and no arrests were made.

"It's a sign of the times, and we can't deny we have people here who are in need," said Karen Dumas, communications director for Mayor Dave Bing. "It's scary and very disappointing. It also shows a need for redirection for our city."

One in four working-age adults in Detroit is without a job and the city's home foreclosure rate continues to be among the nation's highest. One in four families and three out of every 10 individuals live below the poverty level, according to the U.S. Census.

Before Wednesday, Detroit Planning and Development workers already had spent two days handling long lines at City Hall and other locations. Rumors that $3,000 stimulus checks from the Obama administration spurred heavy turnouts.

That helped get 33-year-old William Lambert and his 27-year-old fiancee, Iesha Wagner, to City Hall on Tuesday. Lambert said he is out of work and living with Wagner at her mother's home.

"We kind of fell on hard times," he said. "It's hard working as a carpenter and then not working at all. It's not good right now."

Does anyone wonder if there would be "scuffles erupting" if Detroit suddenly offered 3,500 JOBS?!?!?!
