Re: keep my family in your prayers!

That is absolutely horrible.

My deepest condolences to all involved.

Here's an article on it, but it almost raises more questions......than it answers.

Family members of a Fort Bliss soldier who allegedly shot a married couple Monday in East El Paso, then was later shot and killed, have spent the past two days trying to figure out exactly what happened.

They want to know why Sgt. 1st Class James Steadman, a man described by his family as a "perfect gentleman," was at the home of 1st Sgt. Lykisha "Kisha" Gooding, 39, and her husband, Kelvin Gooding, 44, so early on Monday morning.

James Steadman went to the Goodings' home in the 3700 block of Coco Palm around 6:30 a.m. Monday, police said.

He apparently met Kelvin Gooding at the front door and shot him once in the face. He then went upstairs, confronted Lykisha Gooding and shot her several times. She died at the scene, police said.

As Steadman ran out of the home, he and Kelvin Gooding exchanged gunfire. Kelvin Gooding shot James Steadman in the upper thigh as he was leaving the house. A child inside the Gooding home was able to escape safely. According to emergency radio transmissions, a boy called 911 to report the shooting.

Around 7:30 a.m., Steadman arrived at his apartment in the 8900 block of Kenneth in Northeast El Paso. There he began fighting with a woman at the apartment and was shot during a physical confrontation, police said.

He later died of his injuries. Police have yet to release information on how Steadman knew the Goodings and a reason for the shootings.

No one has been arrested.

Sheltanya Steadman, sister-in-law of James Steadman, said Tuesday that the shooting was "out of character" for Steadman, whom she described as a "perfect gentleman and outstanding father."

"This event was catastrophic, but it's also making a nice man look like a ruthless killer," Sheltanya Steadman said. "What happened? What was going on?"

Fort Bliss officials declined to name the unit James Steadman and Lykisha Gooding were assigned to, citing the ongoing investigation.

"They're assigned to Fort Bliss," said Fort Bliss spokesman Lt. Col. Dennis Swanson.

However, according to past stories published in the Fort Bliss Monitor, both were assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the U.S. Army Garrison.

Whether the two knew each other has not been released. What is known is that they belonged to the same company and that both were very active at Fort Bliss.

Earlier this year, Lykisha Gooding was a contestant in the Fort Bliss Got Talent competition. She also helped launch a Fort Bliss food drive in August.

According to an online biography, she was an aspiring country singer originally from Columbus, Ga., and recently traveled to Nashville to record several songs.

"I'm an optimist, and I'm easily amused by the little things in life," Lykisha Gooding stated in her biography, which also describes Kelvin Gooding as a "wonderful husband."

The Goodings have three children.

A separate newspaper story states that James Steadman participated in a Fort Bliss motorcycle rally earlier this month to promote motorcycle safety and breast cancer awareness. Another story lists him as a participant in a Battle of the Minds event in May that pitted soldiers against eighth-graders from the El Paso Independent School District in a social studies competition.
