Need paint help

I need some advice on repairing a dent. I have done bodywork and painting before, but it has been many years. I do have all the required equipment.
I plan to sand, fill and prime as usual.

Need some advice (techniques) on:
Applying the base coat and feathering it in.
Applying the clear coat and feathering.

Also, is it ok to use rattle can primer?
What about base and clear coat paint recommendations?

Its going to be a challenge. All new paint in california is water based paint. I would suggest doing the body work and prime then have someone familiar with the new water borne paint finish it for you. Just my .02 . I understand its a whole new tec,hnique with the new water borne.

Waterborne is easy. Been using it out here in AZ for about 3 years now. I will never go back to solvent. The ground coats need to be catalyzed. The water will soak through the rattle can stuff and cause rust. Just get a 2k primer and all will be good. Better repair anyway. The key with the water is thin coats. Let each coat flash out all the way. Air movement is a plus. Fans and hand blowers. 200k downdraft is even better! After you get coverage the" control coat" is the final step. Basicly just a light coat with lots of overlap. After it fully drys just clear it as normal. If you need some info or help pm me. I'll help you through it.

After you finish your body work so that its finished in 600 grit wet, scuff the rest of the panel with 800 wet really good. With water based you want almost a dust coat, pull back on the volume amount on your gun so you just have a VERY light mist, do a VERY slightly heavier coat on the body work first then do a dust coat around the area to feather it. Clear the whole panel. Water based is easier to work with just like redknocker says and it seems to color match very well compared to solvent. Good luck in your efforts, I know the stress of trying to blend something and wanting perfect results. Def dont do rattle can crap no matter how tempting, the cheap primer always gets bitchy with the water based product.
