Re: Got me a new truck!

Anybody got some good solid info on this 83 302? I've been finding so much conflicting info about firing orders, what distributor fits it, if its roller cam, if its a HO, or nonHO, etc etc etc... Its getting real old real fast lol.

My boss has a 66 Mustang that had a 351W, he swapped for a 429 stroker crate motor, but his 351W is sitting in a container at our shop. He said I'm welcome to whatever parts that I can use, so I grabbed the front cover, a brand new water pump, new fuel pump, new alternator, and a $300 MSD distributor.

So I pulled the dizzy out, and tried to install this bitchin billet MSD, but it doesn't fit! Wrong deck height, oil pump hole is 1/4" in the 302, and 5/16" in the 351W, so it doesn't work...

Going to try and do a basic tune up/clean up, and see if it smogs soon. I also finalized all the paper work, bought the truck for $1500, title transfer fees and non-op fees were $443, so I'm in it $1943 so far. We'll see the rest...

That engine will have a flat tappet cam and the NON ,HO firing order . Swap a 408 engine into it and have some fun . I’d go EFI if you still plan on passing smog .
Is it a AOD transmission or the C-4/ C5 variant?

a 408 would be nice, but who knows how hard it would be to swap and get CARB approved.

It has an AOD trans.

Re: Got me a new truck!

Nice truck!

The firing order should be embossed on the intake, between the dist and carb, is your dist bad?

And if memory serves me, a distributor from any 289 or 302 will fit the hole, but I think they are by themselves in that respect.

I’m not up on California emissions stuff but I don’t see how putting a “ cleaner” fuel system on the truck would be a no no . Course anything is possible . Wonder if it would be worth retrofitting a factory EFI setup into the truck .

Re: Got me a new truck!

If memory serves me you are correct. We converted an 83 Lincoln to points/carburetor, and it seems like I ordered the distributor for a 73 1/2 ton.
