Want to install a 7.3 in my '56 COE

Hi all,

I'm new here on this particular forum and was wondering if someone here knows (or can put me in touch with someone who has done it) whether it's a relatively simple job to install a 7.3 powerstroke into an older truck, as I wish to do on my '56 Ford COE. I don't want to change the entire chassis to a later model vehicle, but rather install just the engine under this truck, unless it's not possible.

I restore Mustangs for a living, so am no fool with messing with cars, but am no expert with the electronics of a, say '97 7.3 powerstroke and whether they are an easy conversion/fit up (in a wiring sense) to an older truck? I refer specifically to wiring, computers etc.

I have swapped an '89 5.0L injected into an old Ford and nutted that out, while using the original Ford computer, and assume that the 7.3 would be much the same, where I'd have to use the sensors and all the engine bay contraptions from the truck it is removed from. Anyone done this and been successful?

Here's a pic of the '56 COE that I just bought and would like to install it in.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Cheers,
Sean

Re: Want to install a 7.3 in my '56 COE

Ha! I just started a thread a couple days ago on this exact topic: the perception the PSD is too complicated to swap into older vehicles. I assure you it's as easy to swap as the 89 you did.

Check out my video, it's just a general outline of what I'm doing. I'm creating another video now that details just the wiring. I pulled the engine since making the first video and have the wire harness layed out on the table for final configuration.

BTW: I love the old snub nose COEs, you don't see them very often anymore.

Mark, awesome video. Thanks a million for making that available to guys like me. You've given me the kick in the pants that I wanted, to go chase down a donor truck and driveline! I will keep you abreast of how that's going for me as I move through the project.

Cheers, Sean.

That's freakin sweet. I have so many ideas its not even funny. I'd like to put a hot 7.3 with a bts 4r100 my wife's 2 wd lowered ram 1500.! I bet it would scream and it would be one of a,kind I'm sure. But still as easy as you make it sound it sure doesnt look like a easy task from your video.....all I see is wires for miles

I'm working on another video that's only about the wires. I know it looks overwhelming, but honestly it's extremely simple. I got fancy with re-wiring the under hood fuse box, but that's not a requirement. Stay tuned, I'll be posting it soon.

I wanted to wedge a 7.3 into a late 90's mustang I thought that the wiring would be to much . I will be looking forward to your other vids.

Mark, I think the video that you made, makes it very simple. I'm on the hunt now for a California based 7.3 truck to rip apart! Anyone know of a 5 speed truck in the Los Angeles area?

Re: Want to install a 7.3 in my '56 COE

I seen a nice 56 COE with a 7.3 PSD in it at the F100 Nationals last year. I talked to the owner and he used E350 chassis to put the cab on. I think your on the right track by looking for a donor truck. I'm interested in building a COE, I found a 56 and I'm trying to figure out how to get it home, it's 2000 miles away.

Re: Want to install a 7.3 in my '56 COE

if you want simplicity get an international 444e, all you got to do is just wire it up new power and ground wires into the ecm and have it programmed for a stick shift and thats it, its only a couple wires honestly.
