Gear Ratio 4:10 vs 3:73

Okay...
First, I rarely pull a trailer (maybe once a month, and its light).
I'm trying to get the max MPG outta my truck and was wondering if I change from 4:10 to 3:73, what could I expec?

Note that right now I have 36in tires and a 4 in lift (and plan to keep them) so I'm not sure if that would affect the conversion ratio.

Just trying to learn from ya'll

Re: Gear Ratio 4:10 vs 3:73

You have to weigh the cost of gears to gains driveabilty/mpg/towing wise. With 4.10s & 35s you are around 3.73 gears & 31" tires. You can run 36s on 3.73s with an auto, there are alot of people that run that combo everyday. Personally I'd run 36s with 4.10s but since you already have 3.73s it isn't worth the swap. Try driving it & see how it runs & go from there.

Leave it alone, if you go to a higher gear, you mileage will suffer even more. Too low of a cruising RPM will eat up more fuel. Trust me, I know.

16.8 MPG from Ohio to Kansas in my pig averaging 75 mph. That was 3.73's with 285/75/16's(32.68" tall tire)
