7.3 mileage

i have a 1997 obs f250 with the 7.3 with e4od tranny. It is has no tuner, stock gears, stock exhaust, and 33 inch all-terrains. Im getting about 14-15 mpg. is that normal? what kind of mileage could i expect to get if i installed a tuner and 5 inch exhaust?

Re: 7.3 mileage

I get anywhere from 16.5-18 in my early 99 scsb, completely stock with a leveling kit and a worn out 4r100. If you can keep your foot out of it a tuner and exhaust will probaby add a mile or two per gallon, but keeping your toes off the go pedal with a chip in the truck is hard to do

Re: 7.3 mileage

Much depends on how you drive. As for "stock gears" you could get 3.55 or 4.10 when yours was built. I have 3.55 gears on a stock truck (except for open element air filter). I recently added a 3 foot tall contractor cap and 800 lbs to it, the figures I have are from before.

I drive like an old man, no more than 1/4 throttle, upshift at 1200 or so RPM (not a typo), I drive like there is an open glass of grape juice in my bed sitting on carpet that cost $175,000 a square yard to install. I often ge beat off the line at red lights by semi trucks with trailers.

Cruise at 75 - get 16-17.5 mpg.

Cruise at 65 - get 18 - 20

Cruise at 57 ( my truck's sweet spot) and personal best is 24.5 over 830+ miles.

Get on it and play, 15.5 - 16 around town, if I recall correctly. It has been 5+ years since I have done this one.

Re: 7.3 mileage

I can get 21-23 with mine running at about 60 mph, I've got 3.55 gears and a 5 speed manual, 4 inch exhaust, 6637 intake and a DP-Tuner chip, mileage is all about how easy you are on the throttle..

Re: 7.3 mileage

in my '97 7.3L F-250 i get about 13-15 in the city, and about 16-21 on the highway depending on how fast I'm going (when I'm going 50MPH i get about 21, but when I'm going 75-80 MPH i get about 16 or so) do you know what kind of gears you are running in your truck. Mine has 4.10 gears in it, or so i was told by a trusty mechanic buddy. Also is your truck 4X4 or 2wd? because ( someone please correct me if i'm wrong) supposedly that also has an impact on MPG as for the tuner & exhaust , i honestly have no idea, my 250 is pretty much bone stock right now.

Re: 7.3 mileage

To answer the original questions:

Yes that MPG is about average for a truck configured like what you describe.

No, a 5" exhaust will not improve your MPG at all. I put a big exhaust on mine and got ZERO improvement.

If you find a special MPG tune you might realize a half to three-quarter MPG gain. With a commercial tuner or chip, expect a loss of MPG. Been there done that.

Re: 7.3 mileage

I have an 02 6 speed and i get anywhere from 18 to 23 in town blowin all kinds of smoke!! idk how, but i love it!

A chip will definatly get you more mpgs and exhaust will probly do some justice as well as sounding badass!
