mpg on my 550

i have a 2007 550 , auto, 6.0L and it has 4.88 gears.also has a dump bed on it and weighs 10,100 empty. now i know the 4.88s are my main and biggest problem with mpg but aside from that when i bought the truck i was getting 6-8 depending on if i was loaded or not. now with my current mods i am seeing 9-10 loaded and 12-14 empty. the mods are an sct livewire, and a 4 inch turbo back exhaust. so i have gained alot between me changing my driving habits and the tuner. is there anything else i can do to squeeze a few more mpgs out? i also tow alot of heavy loads with it, but would it be worth my time to swap gears in it? go to 4.30 or 4.10? it's only 2wd so i have no low range to use for off road heavy towing so i dont want to go any higher than that. but any ideas?

Re: mpg on my 550

dropping the gear to a 4.30 would probably help alot for furl mileage but hurt the low end power for towing. plus the 550 has a different rear pumpkin and I am not sure how readily different gears are for those or prices..

Re: mpg on my 550

PRices are high for a re-gear on a Dana 110-130

I have the Dana S110----I swapped it in place of my old Dana 135. Those numbers are axle weight ratings.

Im getting 10-11mpg average fuel economy. Lots of stop and go and idling for my PTO/autocrane.

When I go on long trips--the mileage sees around 13-13.5

Truck Chassis : F550 2wd
Truck Weight : 17,000lbs
Truck engine : 7.3L
Transmission : Standard 6spd
Rear diff/gearing : Dana S110-4:30's
Speed : Usually the speed limit if not a few mph over the limit.
Acceleration : Hard lol
Tuner : DP-Tuner standard 80hp non-economy
Mods : New Alliant AD injectors, Ford AIS air filter, 4-5" exhaust, Dual Hpops, regulated return, foil delete

Re: mpg on my 550

I'd look into something like a gear vendors overdrive. that way you can have the low end for towing and a better highway ratio. those aren't cheap either, but they give you the best of both worlds.

Re: mpg on my 550

There's a guy on FTE that runs a Gear Vendors Overdrive, it was originally on a truck with hybrids and a modded H2E, and when he blew the trans on that, he put it on his next truck, with stage 2's and a D66 (both are 7.3's BTW.)
I'd say they were pushing 500 and 400 hp Respectively. So, ya id say they'll hold the powa

Re: mpg on my 550

i'm going through the same thing, I've got the Dana 80 in my 450 and my mileage is around 10, with the tuner. same thing, empty weight is 10,100 and i'm in the process of moving to a 4.10 gear, as well as an automatic from a zf6.

I've always been told once these trucks are above the power band, they just suck down fuel, so the more you can do to get the roms ina manageable range, the better off you are. in your case, a manual might be better.

Re: mpg on my 550

hmmmm so i could keep my 4.88 gears and have ultimate low end for pulling and then have a nice highway gear, right now at 60 mph i'm running 2500-2600 rpm. i have found the most efficient driving speed is 50-55. which is where i achieve 14 or 15. but driving that slow all the time everywhere i go is not time efficient lol

Re: mpg on my 550

Problem is though with all that weight if you go too high of a gear it may be okay empty but loaded it won't be happy. Espically since the 6.0l don't seem to have the same low end grunt that the 7.3l has.
