Question Strange thing happened

I towed a 2000# car hauler with 1000# of granite counter top on it from San Diego through LA to Phoenix (less nasty roads and the Granite was VERY expensive)
I got 13.6 MPG (lots of stop and go around L.A.)
Hauled same trailer and 57 chevy (minus engine and trans_-_ 3350#) 5350#
From Phoenix to Sierra Vista 15.2 MPG
Empty trailer to Phoenix from Sierra vista 14.6 MPG
Stayed at 2000 rpm(72 mph) when traffic permitted. went over 2000 rpm to pass only
It gets 13.6 - 14.2 unloaded
4x4 automatic with 3.73:1 ALL STOCK

Did the fill up the fuel to the top of the filler neck and compute mileage method.
no variance there. Why does it get better mileage when it has a load?
I might just keep 700# of crap under the Tunneau cover i am about to buy if it keeps the mileage up.

Re: Strange thing happened

The problem is, you're trying to figure mpg's over 185 miles.

There are too many inconsistencies from one station to another, filling procedure, angle of parking lot, driving style, terrain, traffic, etc to make any conclusive mpg claims based on that short of a test.

IMO test it over at least 3 tank fulls, same exact driving conditions, road, filling station, and filling procedure (fill it until you see liquid diesel sitting in the neck). Then test without the weight.

I'm sure you'll find that less weight yields you better mpgs, and the higher figure you saw with the trailer was a temporary exaggeration for 1 or more of many, many possible reasons.

moving this to MPG for you where you'll get more hits.

Re: Strange thing happened

^^^ What he said.
I have over 20,000 miles of fuel data on my truck. At least 12,00 of it was stock. I have seen a consistent 1.5-2 mpg increase when I put my chip in.
If you track the fuel usage and make little notes alongside of things that happened that might effect mileage, you can get some interesting data.

Go ARMY!

Re: Strange thing happened

A test of less than 1500 miles is not worth bothering with. Especially if you have an automatic. Head winds, tail winds, traffic density - all play a part.

Re: Strange thing happened

Ok, Still amazes me that this diesel gets better mileage than the 4x4 305 i replaced with it. Gets good mileage towing my toyhauler too.
