I found Low Sulfur Diesel at the on road pump...

A couple weeks ago, I got fuel at a station that I don't go to usually. It's the closest one to me, but they are regularly $0.10 to $0.20 more expensive than "market value".

They had been on the real high side, and, one day, their price was below $3.00 a gallon, and most other places were $3.29 or so. I filled up, and my mileage was just very, very good. Got fuel again there while it was cheap, and I noticed that it listed the fuel has having a sulfur content of 50ppm. And that doesn't make it ULSD.

None of the other local stations have the LSD either after I went out to see if any had it.

Anyone have any LDS vs ULSD mileage stories? Thoughts? I'm a bit surprised, really.

Several stations near me told me they cannot get LSD anymore cuz it's not being made anymore. Doesn't meet EPA requirements so they quit producing it. ??

That was what I thought, but it is incorrect.

I can come up with actual sales data here...
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pe...0_mgalpd_m.htm

In California, yeah, it's completely out. By December 1, 2010, only ULSD everywhere else also. I believe there is a limitation to the amount of LSD that can be produced in comparison to ULSD. I can't find my data, but I think that LSD can only be 15% of production.

I have come across stations that advertise LSD, one of them being a Wal Mart. You can't help but wonder if their pumps never got updated with ULSD stickers. I never seen any difference in economy on those tanks of fuel. There is a Fuel Mart that gives you the option to pick your flavor, off of the I-80/I-90 Turnpike.

If you live near a pilot travel center check there website to see if the one by you has LSD. I was looking on there site and it lists them all off.

Re: I found Low Sulfur Diesel at the on road pump...

I just filled up today. Only 200 miles worth on the tank. Driving did not include any towing. Yes, there has been some warm up time, but I try to reduce that to a minimum by planning my trip times, using the plug in heater, etc.

I filled my tank, approximately 44gals total, with almost 14 gallons of fuel (LSD) . My resulting milage was 14.3 MPG. That's fair, but it is still 2-4MPG below my last tanks. I need a trip or something to blow out the combination of ULSD & LSD. Probably will take some time as I don't have one planned.

This might be a stupid question but what will happen if you run LSD instead of ULSD. I just about did it in my 08 the other day.

I think the extra sulfur might damage the emissions equipment. I don't know what it can handle.

And as a note, the LSD at my local station was 500ppm not 50 as I had in my post earlier. Currently, my mileage is down with the cold and extended idling while loading things in the X, etc., and things like that. Still tracking information though.
