97 standard mpg

I have a 97 powerstroke 4x4 standard cab, 285 tires, 4" exhaust, tonue cover. What kid of milage can I really get, I've read from 15 to 22mph on just diesel and a little motor oil or even the lucus fuel additive.

What gears? I'd say 15 for 4.10s & around 20 with 3.55s alot depends on how you drive.

Re: 97 standard mpg

Most people I know (myself included) get around 14-17mpg, not much you can do but swap in 3.55s if your looking for better MPG.

Re: 97 standard mpg

I get 16 CONSISTANTLY everytime I fill up. 17 +/- a tad when I'm lucky. Thats taking it easy...Most of the time.

Only difference is I have 265's but its not that much of a difference I dont think.

Re: 97 standard mpg

When you are taking youre avg, or best mpg, what mph are you testing it at. I will be running 55mph for 14 miles straight to work and back. It will be 90% of my driving. I will be looking for a set of 3.55's gears though now.

Re: 97 standard mpg

My 4.10 '97 (Smokyred) gets 15-17.5 around town/highway. This truck has chip/injectors, intake/exhaust and BTS trans/285's. I don't baby this truck for fuel mileage, it's got injectors for a reason.

My 3.55 '97 (Silver Stroker) gets 17.5-21 around town/highway. This truck has chip/straight exhaust but stock dp and intake, and 265's. I do take it fairly easy on this truck, it doesn't have anything to prove, that's what my other truck's for!

I am very meticulous about filling up and my numbers have been very consistent, except when I've sprung fuel leaks or I race or hook to the sled! Also highway mph for 4.10 truck is 72-73, and 3.55 truck is 75-80.

Usually around 16 mpg is when I'm running around town. Around town being in the range of 0-45. My town driving is probably about 85%. I dont ever touch the interstate. State road driving is what will creep it up to the 17 mpg range. Just depends on how much I'm on the state roads and also how much I stay out of the skinny pedal on the right. It's tough sometimes.

One thing to look at though is how much it will cost to swap from 4.10's to 3.55's. Then determine how long it will take before it actually makes an impact.
