Best mileage yet from my truck...

I just took a trip down to Ohio to visit my girlfriend this past weekend and logged my best fuel economy to date... Filled up prior to leaving and got the fuel up to where I could see it in the fill neck. I even shook the truck a couple times to get a little more in. Over the trip down and part of the trip back I logged 496.2 miles before I stopped to fill up again. I was able to squeeze 25.710 gallons into the truck(yes, I shook it again and even filled it a little more than before). Do the math and that puts me at 19.3 mpg average. The trip included about 350 highway miles, one burnout for the girlfriend and lots of small town up and down hills driving. I was pleased to say the least. I did take off my 315/75/R16's and put the stock tires back on before the trip so I'm sure that helped a lot(Yes, I recalibrated the speedo for the stock tires before I left).

That's good to hear, you use 80e the whole way?

80e 75-80% of the time... I drove some in stock and 120R but that was just the around town stuff... I did take it easy on the highway though... Bewteen 65 and 70 mph the whole way and besides the burnout, I didn't get into it much driving around.

That's great!
I've found the easiest way to get good economy (best return-on-investment) on the expressway, is to come up behind a semi and hang a couple truck-lengths back from the trailer.

On my truck, there's a better way yet... pull up behind them until the wind quits whistling across the CB antenna and co-ax.. then just sit there.
18-21 mpg depending on terrain is an easy target, at that point.

i bet if you would have left your taller tires on you would have gotten better. so far my best mileage has been with 35's.

I get about 19-21 if i'm easy on it with the setup in sig. Warm up on stock and then run it on 80e.

JLDickmon:
Wayne Gerdes, the guru of the hypermilers, drafts semis all the time. He gets unbelievable MPG. Here’s his manifesto.

If your ticker will take the stress of prolonged driving where you can’t see anything but that semi in front of you, you are a better man than I am.

Re: Best mileage yet from my truck...

I have no issues getting behind a Semi on the interstate but the truck drivers have an issue with it.

Rolled 13 mpg pulling 5700Lbs from sierra vista Az to San diego on sunday 24 Aug 2008
keeping it around 70 (speed limit was 75 for most of it and even the big rigs were blasting past me) in az and drafting semi's in california until the "hill" on the 8 between ocotillo and the golden acorn casino.
adjusting the nut has the greatest effect on mileage hands down.
