I Might Have Hit The Wall

I always thought I could get to 30 MPG with this truck, but to do so I needed more help from my gearing. I figured an overdrive could do it.

Wrong!

It mght get me to 30 MPG, but I'd need to be Bill Gates to afford it.

First, the nearby US Gear rep - a respected and reliable firm (Scheide) told me the no longer installed US Gear overdrives because they could not get parts. That's sad. US Gear was once reliable, but US manufacturing is in free fall so it is a plausible problem.

Gear Vendors is still in the business, but the quote was $5,000 installed. $5,000! To justify that I'd have to drive more than the distance to the moon - 278,000 miles or so.

Maybe its time to admit I've gone as far as possible and get something else.

Re: I Might Have Hit The Wall

Put a cummins in it lmao... seems to be the answer to everything!

I know a local guy claiming 33 mpg and he's got 2wd ext cab like you but it's not lowered, a long bed with 3.55 gears, an overdrive unit, and a small air damn. Hauls around his auxillary fuel tank and fills up every 2,000 miles or so lmao.

Re: I Might Have Hit The Wall

I hear all these Cummins guys and their claims, but they are never willing to demonstrate, so pardon me if I discount these claims.

I tend to agree, it's proven single shots do better then splits in the MPG department.

Re: I Might Have Hit The Wall

If you could install it yourself, you'd be way ahead. I've seen them new for $2500 everywhere, and on ebay even less.
Contact this guy and see if he can help you: [email protected].

A diesel mag a while ago did up a reg cab dually cummins for mileage. All they did was air up the tires, fold the mirrors in, rolled up the windows, taped off all the joints/gaps in the front of the truck, feathered the throttle and got like 27 - 28 mpg, IIRC. Not that the mag people are always the best sources for testing...

I have had quite a few people tell me Single Shots are more economical than Splits...

Re: I Might Have Hit The Wall

Yeah, I read the "Diesel Power" article, too. They drove no faster than 40 MPH.

A self-install is beyond my capabilities. I can't cut and rebalance the drive shaft.

Sport mirrors, roll pan, narrower tires, aluminum or plastic bed (like a hauling bed)...

The shop up here only charges $80 to cut & re-balence a shaft. You give them the mesurements & they will build it for you.
