what daily driver to get?

We have a '99 7.3, and I can squeeze real close to 20mpg on highway driving keeping it at about 60mph, but I want to get a daily driver to get better mileage, my question is;
go with the toyota prius, about 45 to 50 mpg gasoline, or
go with the VW diesel, maybe a late model used one or wait for the new diesel to come out and the later model VW diesel can get 45 to 50 mpg also.

however gas is about a dollar per gallon cheaper than diesel ... whats the best thing to do ?

Re: what daily driver to get?

I still don't get it you have a paid for truck or close to it I assume. Now you want to go out buy a new car or used and have a payment, insurance and upkeep ? Trust me hybrids might be the way to go now but just you wait till it comes time to buy batteries and such.....
Now I ask you where are you saving? Now if you could find a used older diesel vehicle that was super cheap and you could repair it easly and with out a whole bunch out of pocket maybe but you still have another vehicle to license, insure and maintain.Trust me I think about it all the time. I will keep driving my car to work I use 30 a week in gas difference is its paid for and the only reason I am driving it anyway is because the stroke is broke.

There are some bargains to be had in older Honda Insights if you can live with the limited headroom. A lot of them got abandoned when the battery pack went bad, but batteries can be had for under $500.

Insights are still the best hybrids. Skilled hypermilers often get over 90 MPG.

Re: what daily driver to get?

Not sure if it's true or not, but the few people I know with VW diesels say thay have to take it in to the VW dealer for servicing. VW did not realease the rights to make aftermarlet filters, etc, so you can't buy that stuff over the counter, or go to Quick Lube, etc.
Could get very expensive for routine maintenance if it's true.
Again, told to me by several owners, but I have not verified that myself.
We were going to get a Diesel Jetta for the wife till we were told this...

If you can deal with driving a car (I can't) and drive a lot (I don't) sounds like a good plan since diesel will always cost more than gas and getting double your mileage with fuel that costs $1 cheaper per gallon sounds like a good idea to me.

Re: what daily driver to get?

I picked this up for $800. Not a 50 mpg vehicle. The PSD costs me around $15 just to drive to town and back now, this little guy is much less. Not a hybrid, not fancy but gets me there.
The PSD has been reclassified to a toy.

Jim don't know about the brand new ones but the cars that are 1-2 yrs. old you DO NOT need a special anything for I used to PM several diff. VW diesels nothing special here.

I don't think the VW is anything that your normal wrench swinger couldn't handle with the right book. Quite a few modded ones too.
