Having Your Cake And Eating It, Too

This is the whole reason for a pickup - flexibilty. Sometimes you tow, sometimes you don't.

Sometimes you haul a load. Sometimes you just haul butt.

My F-350 came originally with the TT side mirrors. Great mirrors when you're pulling a trailer, but when you're just haulong butt (most of the time) the things are draggier than a pair of flat screen TVs hanging out there. I pulled the TTs off and put the smaller paddle mirrors on it and gained a whole mile per gallon. But when I did pull a trailer - not so good.

Recently, my passenger side paddle mirror got whacked.

I folded it in and drove blind to that side for a while.

I sent off and got a couple of little faired "Blind spot" mirrors.

Having a trashed mirror to experiment with, I worked out a smaller side mirror I could actually use with the mirror folded in.

As you can see the frontal area of the paddle mirror folded back and the same mirror with the little mirror on it is about the same.

I drove this rig around for a while and found the little mirror told me all I need to know about what’s in the other lane.

Next step is to put the TT mirrors back on and fit both of them with the little mirrors and see how well they work.

What is the drag factor when you fold the big mirrors back in comparison to when they are in the normal position?

I had asked about the difference between the big towing mirrors and paddle mirrors awhile back and was ridiculed (maybe just reprimanded) for repeating the mpg savings that I had heard before. Somebody on this site has verified the improvement from swapping the nice big mirrors for the smaller paddle mirrors.

Without wind tunnel data it is hard to say how much drag the mirrors induce, but on cars it is between 6-12% of total area drag.

This will be a interesting deal..

Looking good so far!!!

I have wondered what it would do to fold the mirrors in..

I just started changeing my 4.10 for 3.55 for better MPGs every little thing helps. (well most every little thing)

What mpg's are you getting?
What did you get normally

I have a 2008 with power folding mirrors. I thought about just folding them back on long straight hwy runs.

How much mpg change did you get from lowering your truck?
I want to lower my 4x4 2" f/r :)

Sorry no testing guys.

The electrical controls on the GV went haywire and I can't get it to work right.
