95 F350 truck wont go into reverse

http://www.midnightmods.com/2009/11/...ifter-kit.html
So everything is going fine. Went to grocery store and manual trans wont go into reverse. I move shifter all the way over to the right and try pulling down and wont even try going into gear.
Get it home and start ripping stuff apart. I notice I dont have a spring were this write-up does. On the 12th pic down I am missing this spring. I pulled inspection cover off the side and send a magnet around and found spring. Reinstalled it and temporarily bolted down shifter and truck WILL go into reverse now.
So my question: from what i understand this spring just returns shifter back to middle position. what is the "reverse lockout" I hear about? was the spring my problem? How does the reverse lockout work?

Re: 95 F350 truck wont go into reverse

Update, Got back together. It WILL NOT go into reverse from 5th. If Im in any other gear and try reverse it works. I know 5th and R are on the same shaft so what technically is messed up inside there?

Nothing.

That's the way it's supposed to work. See the reply I gave on "the org.".
