ZF5 Shifter chatter,vibration

I know alot of trucks have the same annoying chatter that is emmited from the shift lever, about everyone i've ever had has done it. Does anyone know of a quick fix for this. The sound drives me nuts, I have to drive down the road with my hand on the shifter so it doesnt make that sound. I was thinking about unbolting the shifter from the shift tower and placing a thin strip of rubber in there and then bolting it back together. Think it will work?
