Shifting issues

I have a 2000 f-250 7.3. When the temperature drops below 40 degrees at night in the morning my transmission will not shift from 2nd to 3rd. I literally have to stop the truck and put it back in park and then try again. Has has anyone else had this issue and what is causing it to do that?
