issues with overdrive?

hey guys i have a 2005 f250 6.0 bullet proofed with new injectors 40k ago.
i have recently lifted the truck and replaced the following: tires: 35x12.50x17
ball joints, shocks, hub assemblies, end links.

i have recently noticed that there is a deep roar coming what sounds like the front or mid section of the truck at around 70-80mph only under load. if i let off the gas at the same speed it stops. it will not do it if i am accelerating at that speed in 5th gear but if it shifts into 6th/OD it starts and wont stop till i let off the gas and drop below 70. i have no knowledge about transmissions but like i said its only in 6th. any experience or history on this subject? and again i do have new injectors on the truck, no misses or rough starts.

thanks in advanced

Re: issues with overdrive?

Well I'm not a great tranny guy but your truck should have a 5r110w which is a 5 speed transmission. Maybe what your feeling as a shift is the lock up and something is slipping in the torque converter making the noise you are hearing. Like I said I know enough about auto to get myself in trouble. Just a guess on my part.

Re: issues with overdrive?

i didnt realize that i appreciate the info. i do have a sway bar bushing that has rotted out im gonna replace it tomorrow as its been annoying me with the noise and i read somewhere that its possible the tranny can cause rattling through the sway bar so ill see if that fixes it first!

Re: issues with overdrive?

The 5R110W is a five speed, but it has six ratios. In normal operation it shifts 1-2-3-5-6. In extreme cold weather it shifts 1-2-3-4-6.

As for the original problem, I'm about useless in diagnosing a noise that I can't hear in person. My guess is that it is the engine fan engaging. When it engages it is a very loud roar. I have never heard a torque converter make a noise like this.

Re: issues with overdrive?

I would do a drivetrain and front end shake down tests, meaning get under the truck, put front tires in the air and start looking around with a small pry bar for looseness
In technical shop speak you have a "whiiring noise under load"

check driveline U joints with truck in N and wheels chocked
check front hub/bearings for possible wear and noise
Check rear wheel bearings for wear or rough spots, leaky seals
any brakes dragging? With all that work you just did anything you touched is suspect go back over all of it
Make sure a hub(s) isnt locked/locking and spinning the axleshafts to the t case
remove front driveshaft see if noise changes
Rotate tires see if noise moves, some 35" tires can make lots of road noise at 70-80 mph
Do you have a carrier bearing?

i do have a carrier bearing and suspect that it is going out as one of the symptoms is shuttering while accelerating from a stop. i will try to get with my buddy and go over everything else, the new hubs are good except the actual 4wd engage on the passenger side is locked in free mode. cant engage it. as for everything else im not sure. its possible i may have a driver side front caliper sticking but the noise wouldnt just stop when you let off the gas would it? same for tires? if your still traveling 80ish mph wouldnt it continue? it seems to do it when its in the final gear/OD and under load.
