97 powerstroke transmission trouble shifting into forward gears

My buddy is having issues with his 97 auto trans. Sometimes it will go right into gear other times it takes 20 min to get in gear. It won't go into any forward gear or drive. Any idea from reading the other threads I am thinking maybe the solenoid.

"The" solenoid? There are four in the transmission. Which one do you mean? None of them control engagements.

If reverse works normally and no forward gear does, I suspect a bad seal in the forward clutch. That means the transmission needs to be rebuilt.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping it didn't need a rebuild but I guess it's probably needing one.

Take it from experience, if it takes a while for it to engage D, 2, or 1, you've got a mechanical issue related to the Forward Clutch that no amount of new fluid, solenoid packs, or even prayer will resolve. Gonna need rebuilt :-/
