New truck, 5R110 wouldnt shift past 2nd

I just picked up a 2006 F250 King Ranch the other day, hoping to get a year out of the 6.0 till I get a Cummins readt for it. I went camping this weekend (this seems to be when powerstrokes always break down...) and everything was great till I went to leave today and it wouldnt shift past 2nd. I pull over and it made a grinding gear in park, then I had no gears at all.

I turned the truck off and back on, got back on the road and the same thing, only 2nd gear. Like 4500rpm at 50. Pulled over, off and on, try again. Do this 4 times and it finally ran thru all the gears. Never took it out of drive on the way home. I was going to use this trans for the Cummins but now I am thinking zf6....

Common issue or common culprit for this? Havent been able to get back on the road to see if it still does it, ill know tomm on my way to work.

I figured id get past the 1st week without issues, I guess not!

Thanks

not common but they only tolerate clean fluid since it has some fine tolerance moving solenoids that do all the shifting

and you probably don't know the history whats the milage and how's the fluid look?

PS my power stroke only brakes down never I think it like camping ?

Yea no history, 157k fluid looks clean but it might be freshly changed. It shifts really nice I think, it was just thia fluke thing this morning, hopefully. Just wondering if theres something to look for that can make it act like that.

And I guess what I meant was something always seems to go wrong when you are out in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately it fixed itself because 200 miles at 4500rpm in 90F heat would probably have ended bad.

hopefully it has the approved fluid otherwise it could be the route of the issue

i never buy anything without doing all the fluids in a fairly short time afterwards

I know what you meant on the breakdown and the timing I was just letting you know there are some 6.0's that get er done

knock on wood

Good point, I usually swap out all fluids shortly after purchase so ill probably move that one to the top of the list.

I'll bet your truck is a 4x4 because this problem points to a transfer case problem, not the transmission.

Good point, as my 4x4 light doesnt work and 4x4 only appears to work with the hubs manually locked. I might have tried to put it in 4hi to see if it fixed anything, I dont remember honestly. Unrelated to the not going past 2nd thing?

Truck drove fine today so ill just worry about it if it happens again, I guess. Whats the "average" lifespan of these trannys anyways? I know there are a ton of variables.

Tuning is the largest factor. I got 200k out of my original. With good clutches and proper maintanence they can go much longer than that.
