Shifting issues.

Im new to the Diesel thing and some in site. My trans in my 97 seems to shift into gears that its not ready for. Its hard to explain here but it seems like its getting into the higher gears too soon and lugging the motor until I step on it to make it shift up and to make things worst it hits over drive by the time I get to about 45mph if im just driving normal, hope that makes sense. is there a sensor i should look at or is it time for a new trans?

Re: Shifting issues.

Diesel transmissions upshift faster than a gas motor. There powerband is down low in the rpm range. 45 is normal for OD.

Re: Shifting issues.

I just noticed mine does that too. Seems like it's way too early. Its only in 2nd for like 1-2 seconds.

Re: Shifting issues.

Yes, the old body style trucks shifted too soon. That's the way they were designed. You could get a custom chip to change it.

I have no idea what DP can do. They may know what they can do, I don't.

Re: Shifting issues.

I have some new files from Tony Wildman and they shift nicer than what I have had. 2-3 shifts at about 80 kph (50 mph) and to OD at 100 kph (60 mph) and downshifts at 90 kph which is nice.

Mark how are shifting parameters determined i.e. through engine RPM, speed or a combo?

Has anyone made a paddle shifter as that would be really nice I think....
