My 6 speed shifts weird...

So, 2004 with the ZF6. When I'm shifting from say second to third, sometimes it will sorta click a little when I shift. Like it's not fully disengaging as I switch gears. It did it today going from 3rd to 4th. I've had it actually feel like it jumps out of 3rd on me when I let out on the clutch before. Every gear shift, when I let out on the clutch, it jerks/bucks. It's annoying to say the least. Doesn't matter how slow or how fast I shift gears, it does the same thing.

Another issue is if I'm trying to shift into reverse, I physically have to push it hard to get it into gear. It doesn't just shift in easily. 1st is the same way. I've heard ole timers talk about a tranny getting out of sync, but have no idea if that is still an issue with today's manuals. What do you guys think? Could it be my clutch not fully disengaging, or do I have a tranny issue itself? Thought about taking it in to the dealership, but don't want to get the run around since it's still in warranty. Figured I'd get a few ideas here first.

FYI.... no power mods other than a 4" exhaust.

Re: My 6 speed shifts weird...

Go get a pre bled master/slave cylinder from ford and install it. Sounds like the clutch isn't fully disengauging, and the master/slave cylinder would be the issue.

That would definatly take care of the issue, with not being able to get it into a starting gear when stoped.

Re: My 6 speed shifts weird...

I can get it to shift into gear from a stop. It's just that I have to physically push it into first/reverse. It doesnt just shift into one as easily and with as little effort as it should.

Re: My 6 speed shifts weird...

Sounds like its not fully disengauging the clutch, which would be the junk master/slave cylinder that you can replace with new junk (junk as in plastic hydraulics )

Re: My 6 speed shifts weird...

How hard is it to replace one? I still have the factory extended warranty, so maybe I'll just let the dealership replace it.

Re: My 6 speed shifts weird...

The master cylinder is the piece behind the firewall in the engine bay that the clutch petal pushes into, and if you follow the black line down to the tranny it connects to the slave cylinder on the drivers side of the tranny.

Re: My 6 speed shifts weird...

Took it in to the dealership a couple days ago. Got it back this afternoon. Was indeed the slave cylinder. Said it was leaking fluid. They replaced it and sent me on my way. Definitely shifts better now. It had shifted rough since the day I got it, but never really thought much of it until it progressively got worse. Now she's smooth as silk (well as much as can be expected from a truck that size). Now I can actually enjoy shifting through the gears!

Re: My 6 speed shifts weird...

been through a couple of those on my late 99 zf6, real easy to change out, no bleeding or anything as its a sealed unit

just an fyi, obviously you found the source and corrected it, which is good, but for future ref. those are also symptoms of bad tranny fluid(dont ask me how i know)
mine(tranny) was replaced a short time ago, i had the same issues, thinking the same, but checked the fluid first, and it was nasty bad

actually called the zf group, which was quite helpful, and with crossed fingers and some serious praying, after i changed the fluid, and flushed 2x im back to good.
still not sure what made the fluid go bad so quick, but keeping an eye on it now, dont wanna drop another 4-5k on something i could avoid
be sure and check your fluids if you dont already!!

Re: My 6 speed shifts weird...

Well I'm back to the rough shifts. I'm getting that "click" when I'm shifting from one gear to the next. I'm really starting to wonder if my synchros are going bad. That's what it feels like...like gears aren't lined up when you shift.
