Question on E4OD interchangeability

Hi ,
I have a 1996 E250 cargo van with a 4.9ltr inline 6. It has a E4OD , i don't have the $ to do a rebuild right now. I wanted to find a transmission at a junk yard so I could get by for a little while. Will any E4OD work? or do I need to find a particular year? or will any E40D work as long as its out of a vehicle 1996 or newer? Does it need to be out of a E250 or F250 or can it be out of a E150 or F150? Do i need to find one out of a vehicle that has the same motor size or can it be out of a car with a 8cyl engine? or are they geared differently inside or is the only difference the torque converter? Any help greatly appreciated I am sort of a newbie with transmissions and trying to do this as cheap as possible and doing it myself. Thanks

Re: Question on E4OD interchangeability

Any gasser E4OD will work. It's the diesel that is different. Stick with the later stuff if you can. 97 has the most updates.

Question Re: Question on E4OD interchangeability

so you are saying any E4OD ,preferably 1997 or newer, will work as long as not out of a diesel. That it does not matter weather its out of a E150 or E250 or F150 or F250 and that the motor size does not play a factor either?

You should go for 95 and up. 97 is the best for the E4OD. Any gas engine model will work.It dose not matter if it came out of a truck or a van.

That's not right.

An E4OD that was bolted to a 460 will not bolt to a 4.9L. You need one from a 4.9L, 5.0L, or 5.8L.

Forgot the 460 is an odd ball.

Question Re: Question on E4OD interchangeability

Thanks for the responses. A while back I found an E4OD at a junk yard and I called the Ford dealership and talked to a guy in the parts dept. The truck I found it in was a V8 my van has a 4.9 inline V6 the rep told me it would not work that the internal gears in the transmission are geared differently is this true or was he just blowing smoke? Does anyone have any tips or advice on finding a replacement E4OD when I go to the junkyard and start looking to make sure I will find one that is interchangeable.

Listen to this guy. If he says it'll work, it'll work. Notice what it says by his avatar "Former Ford Trans Engr".

Ford makes it

Re: Question on E4OD interchangeability

Like Mark said. You will need one from a 4.9, 5.0 or the 5.8. They are all the same.

Re: Question on E4OD interchangeability
