99 F250 transfer case problem

My son in law has a '99 F250 that he recently got and it won't shift into 4wd. He has voltage to the switch until he switches to 4wd, then no power, and no shift. Where should we start? Is there a common issue with this year TC?

Re: 99 F250 transfer case problem

I wouldn't worry about voltage at the switch at this point. The switch has a different resistance for each position.

There is an entire troubleshooting procedure in the manual. Many of the steps require you to have a higher level scanner to read error codes from the GEM (module that controls the 4x4 operation).

If you can't read the codes, I would check the shift motor fuse and relays.
I have attached the diagram for them.

Thanks for the help. My truck is a 03 F250, but no problems, so I don't have any idea how to help him.
