Trans not wanting to a hold a gear

When towing the trans is shifting up a gear really early and lugging like it is wanting to find a gear in between. I was thinking the TC might need to be upgraded. What are your guys thoughts on what to do? If I was to rebuild the trans to get me by for a while what all would you recommend I get TC, Valve body? The truck is a 2000 7.3L auto with 130K. Thanks

I don't understand how the torque converter, or turbocharger, or transfer case, or whatever else TC might be could affect this.

What you need is a different computer program. All the shifting happens when the computer tells it to happen. No hardware change is going to help with this.

Re: Trans not wanting to a hold a gear

I never thought about the computer. Could I get that fixed by getting a chip with some trans tunes? When I am towing and get on throttle from a stop the truck will take off fine up until about 2200 rpm's. Then the trans up shifts and lose all momentum. This has been going on for about 8 months.

There are no code that I have found so far. The stock turbo went out so I installed a van turbo about 6 months ago. And I thought about this.

Does your speedo work correctly? Is it accurate? If not, that could be causing the trans to shift at the wrong time.

If the speedo is working correctly then a chip with trans tunes is the only way to fix this.

Re: Trans not wanting to a hold a gear

Awesome thanks for the help. If I get a chip setup for towing and econ will the trans hold up for a while or is there something that I could look at doing to it now?
