Automatic not down shifting

I just bought a 1996 f350 2wd with 186k Mls.
When you take off with the transmission lever in D , it seems the transmission takes off in second gear. If I manually downshift to 1 she shifts into first Gear. When I come to a stop while driving in d , the transmission still stays in 2nd.
The OD light is not flashing, Transmission fluid is at the right level, clean and does not smell burned.
While driving, shifting is all smooth. Throughout the gears. No slip
Any thoughts? Thanks

Btw, I also posted the question on a different page to see if anybody has experienced the same.

Re: Automatic not down shifting

If you tap the throttle while holding the brake (such as while sitting at a traffic light) does it still take off in 2nd, or will it drop to 1st? My 01 did this, it had a broken spring in the valve body.

Re: Automatic not down shifting

Are you sure the indicator linkage isn't stretched? Tried counting from reverse, to neutral, to drive, making sure reverse engages when the dash indicator shows reverse? Does that make sense?

The first step is to check for codes. The places that read codes free can't read the transmission codes that you need.
