E40D help...

New to this forum but need some help. My 1996 F350 7.3, 4x4 started downshifting this morning coming in to work. I was running about 65-70 mph and it would shift down into 4th and rpm would go up by 3-400 then down to 5th and rpm back to 1800 ish. This would happen repeatedly running down the highway with no rhyme or reason. This cycle repeated itself probably 25 times or more. Fluid is clean, smells good and have never had any issues with it in the 6 months I have owned it.

Thoughts!?

Thanks---
Justin

Re: E40D help...

My first thought is that what you described is impossible. You have a four speed transmission, not a five speed. So it can't shift to fifth gear, there are only four gears.

You might be seeing the torque converter locking and unlocking. Or it may be shifting from fourth to third gear. What happens if you press the OD OFF button to keep it from shifting to fourth gear? Then if it does it we know that the problem is the torque converter locking and unlocking.
