Manual Transmission problems

Hey I'm kinda having an issue on the work truck. It's not my toy so I can't really afford to have problems with it. It's a pre99.5 F350 with I think the ZF6(6 speed). The problem I'm having is that when it gets hot out or I'm working the truck hard in the hay field the clutch just seems like it's not disengaging. Now I know the problem and its the hose coming from my slave cylinder. The rubber is expanding when it gets hot instead of keeping pressure. Now what makes this performance related in (my mind) is I want to know if there is like a better line or "performance" line I can get. Like a braided line or something. If you could help me I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Manual Transmission problems

I do not know of anyone that has made a decent replacement slave and master cylinder setup, but I did install a stainless steel line on mine when I was pulling. The fittings in the ends of the line are steel and are held in using dowel pins. I pressed the dowel pins out, temporarily removed the sealing o-rings, welded -4 JIC fittings to the ends of the steel insert and reinstalled the fittings into the cylinders. I then made a braided stainless line that ran to both JIC fittings. I bench bled the setup and it gave me very little issues when done.

Another solution would be to wrap your existing line in a heat shield material like a fire sleeve for a hydraulic hose.

Re: Manual Transmission problems

I had one fail on me not too long ago. I took it back to my parts guy at the ford dealer and he did a one for one exchange based on the fact that the factory part failed prematurely. I believe that south bend makes an upgraded unit if you are really looking for an upgrade. Or you can just go HRT style... :)

South Bend does not make an upgraded unit for the Fords - or at least they didn't not that long ago. Someone correct me if they started building them.....

Re: Manual Transmission problems

Ok. Thanks for the input. Do you remember the size of fittings or where you got your braided line?

Re: Manual Transmission problems

Some of the replacement slaves and pre-assembled hyd kits include a little thermal "diaper" that wraps around the slave cylinder. Probably just for this reason. Not sure what material it is, but fabbing something similar might help.

I used -4 JIC fittings and used the same 1/4" stainless braided line that I use at work
