Driving home a couple weeks ago, I shifted from 4 to 5, and the gear shifter didn't feel firm, but kinda like play dough. I thought "oh no, my tranny is about to go". But when I shifted from 5 to 6, the shifter BROKE OFF.
I took off the boot, took off the sleeve from the tranny, had my buddy pick me up, took the shifter and the sleeve with me, welded the two back together with a Hobart 110v with flux wire (temporary fix), let it slow cool, went back to the truck, installed it, and drove home. Cost me a headache and an hour. The shifter is in a slightly different location than it was, but it's a little closer to me now, and further away from the dash. So 4th is where 2nd normally was. Oh well, I can say I like this position a little better. I don't slap the upfitter switches when I bang into 6th anymore.
Still.....you gotta be kidding me.
Last night, I put a grinder on every weld, new and old, heated it all up real good, I cut a gusset out of some 3/16" scrap, and I welded the snot out of it. Then I let it slow cool before painting it and installing it. It now has a gusset, bigger welds, and should hold up to my abuse. My luck, it'll break right above the gusset on the shifter. Don't laugh at my welds...the longest bead was less than an inch.
