Transmission temp increases really fast?

I pulled a heavier trailer for the first time today. It was around 80-85 deg. When I first took off the temps went from 140 to 210 in one gear. Once it shifted it dropped back down to around 150-160. It stayed low going down the road just went up fast on acceleration. I cannot remeber if it was in 1st or 2nd that it did it. I do have a stock tranny with a BTS valvebody and a Trucool additional cooler. Is there something wrong or something I can do to keep it lower?

Re: Transmission temp increases really fast?

Not that heavy, but the heaviest one I will pull. Probably around 8k.

That seems a little fast for that amount of increase. The truck in my signature with 12,000lb toy hauler won,t do that with wot takeoffs in 40T

Re: Transmission temp increases really fast?

That is what I thought. I had a hard time getting it to shift so the temp would drop without it getting over 220.

Re: Transmission temp increases really fast?

I did some reading and found out that the gauge probe should be in the tranny on the drivers side by the linkage. I looked and there is nothing there. After looking some more the previous owner has a fitting in the line going to the coolers. Could this be the problem?

Re: Transmission temp increases really fast?

To clarify the previous post, the fitting is the temp sender.

It's normal for temps to rise that fast in the line to the cooler. Get on a long, slow grade and you'll see 300F in that line!

Re: Transmission temp increases really fast?

Thanks for the help. I think I will install a new gauge in the port on the drivers side so I have some good comparisons.

Re: Transmission temp increases really fast?
