wont hold a gear

my 2000 PSD with a auto wont hold a gear down a hill except in overdrive,
if I pull it out of overdrive or 2nd or 1st it wont hold the truck back and acts like its in neutral. if I give it throttle if goes fine, just wont hold the truck back.
I had a different truck a few years back that did the same thing, other than that
everything works great.
what do you think? programming, bad coast clutch

the truck is all stock and has 100k on it, I was going to do a torque converter lock up switch, is this going to correct the problem?
thanks for your help in advance.

Re: wont hold a gear

It's the coast clutch. The only way to fix it is to take the trans out and fix the coast clutch. It isn't in the torque converter, so nothing you do with the converter lockup will make any difference.

Re: wont hold a gear

so what is holding the truck back while its in overdrive?
am I doing damage to the trans to let the truck basicly coast down a hill at slower speeds 30-40 MPH when its not in overdrive?
what does it take to make it act like a manual trans, I would like full control of shifting and TC lockup, say Im headed up a hill with a load in overdrive and want to mash the throttle with out it down shifting or unlocking the converter. is there a correct way to accomplish this? Thanks.

Re: wont hold a gear

The overdrive clutch is holding it back in overdrive. When the trans is in the lower three gears the overdrive clutch is off and the overdrive one way clutch overruns on decels. Applying the coast clutch locks the overdrive one way so that there is hold back. The overdrive clutch does this in fourth gear.

You need either a custom chip or an aftermarket trans controller to replace the PCM to do what you want.
