ZF5 differences?

I just bought a used ZF5 and t-case from an '88 7.3 truck to go into my '96. Aside from the slight ratio changes between the -47 and -42, are there any other differences I should be aware of? Will all the wiring/sensors from the older tranny work with the rest of my '96?

Re: ZF5 differences?

There are no sensors on the ZF5. The only electrical connection to the ZF5 is the reverse light switch, and it should be the same. The -42 is rated to withstand less torque than the -47.

There is a set of position switches on the t-case, that turn on the 4x4 and Low Range lights on the dash. The connectors may be different between the two years. Just in case they're different, you should be able to surmise, either from a diagram or from simply ohming the combinations of wires with the shifter in its various positions, which wire is which and splice in the connector.

Re: ZF5 differences?

I'm going to re-use the t-case that's already in the truck, otherwise I'd have to get my hands on the slip yoke to go with the output shaft.
