e40d vss code

i have a 97 f350 with e40d trans.. sometimes when i start the truck the overdrive light will flash and come up with vss malfuction. i replaced the sensor with a motorcraft and harnass. it still does it. my spedo does not flutter i dont think it is the psom. i can reset it by shutting truck off and restarting it.. when it goes into limp mode it slams into gears and doesnt know when to shift. i restart truck and the light goes off and shifts perfect. im not sure what it is maybe pcm? any ideas? it only does it whe i first start it once in awhile or if i am driving on highway at steady speed for a couple hours thanks

You need to check the wiring. Looking fine doesn't mean anything. How does it check out electrically?

Re: e40d vss code

Are you suggesting maybe doing a resistance test on the wire from one end to the next end to see if it can carry the ohms?

Yes I am. Also check for shorts to ground and shorts to power.

Re: e40d vss code

I havent had a chance to test the wires yet.. where should I test on the other end of them(opposite as sensor, where do they go?). I've been trying to get a wiring diagram but cannot find one anywhere and I don't want to sign up for alldata just for this. If you could help would be great.. thanks

Re: e40d vss code

I don't have a wiring diagram. The best way is to probe the back of the connector, not the end that plugs into the sensor. If you probe the end where the sensor connects you can spread the pins and create an issue where there wasn't one before.
