99 550 tranny

I am looking at a 550 ..It has some issues that I can deal with . But the guy is running hydraulic fluid instead of marcon 5...It only has 180,000 on the clock....It doesn't slip but just shifts funny..I have a 02 250 with 240,000 and i pull some heavy loads with it....Now I have put 130,000 of the miles since 08.So I think I have a good idea how these trucks shift. Is the 550 fixing to eat up the tranny or can I just flush and add marcon 5 and chalk it up to the 488's and being a 99??I know they don't last for ever , But cant afford to buy the truck and replace tranny..

I don't know what damage hydraulic fluid might do to the transmission. It might ruin the friction material.

You could try to flush out the hydraulic fluid and replace it with MERCON V. It MIGHT be fine.

Man I have worked on tractors, bucket trucks and other equipment that uses hyd fluid and that stuff is God awful. Its not going to be a one time flush probably 5x or more to get it out. Ive never seen a hyd fluid that wasnt thicker than trans fluid cold, but when it gets hot it seems pretty thin.

Re: 99 550 tranny

Yeah, I about crapped my pants when he told me that...He had a tranny leak and he said it was cheaper...{ front seal} But like I said I have alot of wiggle room on the price .. I have heard of people using hydro for other stuff..Will flush a few time and try it ...It has a fuel presure problem..Lack of ... Think it is something with the daul tanks , they are aftermarket..and has some kind of transfer thing on the dash??Came with the western hauler type bed...But if bad gos to worse.. I have a zf5 setting in my shop floor ,,I wish it was a Zf6...
