E4OD repair question

I have a 1997 7.3 with 184k miles. It has the original trannie, which has been acting up lately. I couple of days ago I hauled some scrap to the salvage yard. After I unloaded and got my money, I put the truck in Drive and accelerated. The truck acted like it was in neutral and would not move. It got up to about 1800 RPMs, then finally caught 1st gear. I kept accelerating, up to about 2500 RPMs and the truck would not shift into 2nd. I stopped at a red light and shifted down to "1st" gear. When the light turned green, I accelerated, then I shifted into "2nd"....then finally into Drive. I drove about 17 miles back home and the trannie seemed to work fine. I know it's not a whole lot of info to go by, but I'm just wondering what I might be looking at as far as repairs. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: E4OD repair question

Thanks for the reply Rob. Would that be around $1k in parts only or would it include labor? I'm not going to do the work myself. My mechanic uses a trannie tech at his shop, so I'll pick his brain about it tomorrow.
