Amsoil Severe Gear

I need to change my rear diff oil and was wondering if anyone is using Amsoil Severe Gear? Do I also need the Amsoil Diff Slip addative with this? Any other suggestions as to which fluid to use?

Re: Amsoil Severe Gear

I've used it for years, it's good stuff, IMO.

The common advice is to fill it with the Amsoil, drive it and see if you hear anything from the differential, if you did, you were supposed to add the additive. For the couple bucks that the additive costs, I just add it at oil change time and don't worry about it.

Make sure to use the right viscosity for each diff, I *think* they're different for the front and back, if you have 4wd.

Good luck.

Re: Amsoil Severe Gear

Amsoils Gear Oils are very good quality. Use with great confidence.

I had to add 4oz of amsoils slip lock Differential Additive. I pulled the truck out into a circle drive and did a couple of figure 8's. Noticed right from the first turn, that I needed to add a little.

I put 75W-140 in the rear and 75W-110 in the front. Within the next 50K miles I will drain the rear again, and add a finned diff cover with a drain plug to help cooling and easy change in the future.

Re: Amsoil Severe Gear

Any ideas how much it will take with a Mag-Hytec diff cover?

Re: Amsoil Severe Gear

I want to say it's almost 6 quarts. I wouldn't put the additive in unless you feel you need it. I never needed it in mine. People get all crazy about the limited slip additive and all it really does is make the clutches slip easier.
