I don't think you can cause any damage using 5w40. It will help during the winter months since its thinner to start with.

Re: thoughts on 5w 40

well i was lookin at my dads owner manual for his 01 ex PSD and it says running like 5w 40 in the summer may cause damage because of the heat.

Re: thoughts on 5w 40

The manual for my truck says 5w40 during the winter is fine. It has a temperature chart if you're interested? I can't recall what it says off the top of my head but, 5w40 is recommended for cold weather.

Re: thoughts on 5w 40

It's still a 40 weight oil at higher temperatures, it just flows like a 5 weight when cold. I guarantee you there are more people having problems with 15w40 Rotella than any of the good 5w40 oils. Personally I use the Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w40 and my truck has never been happier.

Re: thoughts on 5w 40

Just about all 5w40 is synthetic. Rotella 5w40 is the cheapest at about $16/gal and Amsoil, Valvoline and Mobil 1 are all in the $25 to $30 range.
