How smart is your dipstick??

Just read in my Farm Show about a Smart dipstick called Intellistick. It replaces your dipstick and monitors the oil in the crankcase. Detects water, coolant, fuel, or low oil and if the viscosity is to high. It tracks the additive depletion and helps the customer decide when to change oil and or filters. It displays gathered info on smartphones, pdas, laptops, or other devices using bluetooth technology. Starting this fall there will be an in dash gauge available for all you gaugewhores. MSRP is $499 as of now, but street price will probably be lower. Check it out at www.intellistick.com

At that price, i don't think that will put Blackstone out of business. That's 25 oil analyses.

Re: How smart is your dipstick??

I don't think that is the goal of the company. Blackstone is great at what they do and they give me peace of mind about the internals of my motor. But I do think that them telling me I could go another "X" amount of miles after I have already changed my oil is pointless. What happens if they say I could go an extra 2-3k miles on my 5k change. I try to do an extended oil change per their recommendations and the oil I get (even if it is the same brand and weight) doesn't have the exact same additive package or was at the end of a production run or I have done alot of towing or have a ring start leaking, ect. ect., and I toast a motor because of something that could have been avoided it I changed it at 5k. The benefit of this device is monitoring the oil as it is in the crankcase still. It can tell you when you should change oil. If it could save someone an oil change or two without damage to the motor if could help pay for itself in the long run.
