Due for oil change

Well it's been 5k miles so it's time again. I have always ran rotella 15w40. Have been thinkin on changing it up this time to rotella 5w40 synthetic. I've heard a lot of good things about this oil but most I've seen use it to help with cold starts. It's getting warmer now so will it hurt to run the 5w40 in the summer?

No, it is still a 40 grade oil at operating temp....it has better cold flow properties (hence the 5w). IMHO in warm weather (above 20-30 degrees) your not going to notice much of a difference.

Alright I just wanted to try something different, gonna switch to synthetic no matter what. I'd say I'll do the 5w40 since it won't hurt anything. You think I'll notice a difference in switching to high grade filters and synthetic oil? A few guys have told me that it will run smoother.

Well, what do you mean by high grade filters? 'smoother' is a very arbitrary term of measurement, unless you have some Nvh equipment there is no way to get empirical data on it. But if you want to run synthetic, rotella t6 is a good oil and I am sure you will have no problems.

Well Not really high grade I guess but the filters made for synthetic oil. And no I don't have all that equipment or anything but I don't expect any big change either. I was just wondering if you guys thought that it would be a good switch. I've already decided that's what Im goin with.

Filters made for synthetic oil? What are those?

I have heard of synthetic media filters but that refers to what the filter media is made out of...a synthetic based material...not cellulose (aka paper)

Will an ELF7405 fit an OBS? IMHO that would be a good filter to run with T6. Should have no problem getting 7500 miles or so out of that with a UOA.

You may be right about the synthetic material I didn't read too closely on it, I just seen synthetic and assumed it was for that type of oil, it was also about $6 more than the other filters. Yes the ELF7405 fits I seen a review an obs guy put on here and he said nothing but good things about it.

Looks like it will fit...

While the FL1995 is a good filter in its own right (18 microns absolute), the ELF7405 is a bit better (15 microns absolute) with MUCH more media but it does cost about 2.5 times more than the MC filter. Ryder has them for a descent price, some shops want an arm and a nut for them.

I run OCIs that are slightly longer (6-8K) than the ford spec and I prefer to have the larger capacity filter for it. I know it is a bit overkill but whatever.
