Is 6000 miles pushing it with Rotella-T Syn?

'95 F250 ECLB 4x4 ZF5, 71,000-ish miles. Running Shell Rotella-T Synthetic 5w40 in the crankcase. I'm debating whether to change the oil before an upcoming road trip or after. It has about 3000 miles on it now, and will have about 6000 on it after the trip. I S-WAGged that 5000 was a good OCI for this particular oil, but I'm wondering if I should push it to 6000, or go ahead and do it now at 3000 to be safe. It'll be mostly Interstate driving. Am I pushing my luck at 6000?

I can't argue the point "better safe than sorry"

However in my 03 7.3 I change mine right in that range. 5-7k. Most of the time around 5k though. Rotella T is too damn expensive to change out every 3k.

Oh, I forgot to mention - the miles on it are pretty light duty (no towing), and it has a Mobil 1 oil filter.

madpogue: MHO is your driving habits sound very easy on the oil... Highway miles don't stress the oil what so ever unless your towing heavy... RTS is a very robust oil... My last run with RTS I took a full yr... 9K miles... UOA at 6K miles showed still alot of life left in the oil and TBN was still within range... This was with some towing... The 9K mile UOA showed the oil was slowly losing life and TBN was should up as 3... It was time to change...

With that said... It's your F250... Your Investment... You do what you feel is right...Nothing wrong with changing it, if your wallet will allow... Pushing it @ 6K? No! It is a shame to dump RTS at 3K though, still alot of life left in the oil...

I can't tell you what to do... Since it's such a long road trip ya might go ahead... Something else to think about is your fuel filter... Take a spare... 3K miles is a long way from home... with alot of dirty diesel out there...Try to only fill up at big major truck stops... It's not a full time solution to dirty diesel, but it keeps from filling up with diesel that's been sitting in the ground for months...

Good Luck

Re: Is 6000 miles pushing it with Rotella-T Syn?

Thanks for the replies, all. Well my wallet would allow the oil change, it's more a case of what the clock will allow. Lots to do before we leave. Now I think of it, it's probably at 4K now, so it'll be 7K on the return, but as you said, given the light duty, that'll probably do.

And oh man, thanks for the heads-up re. the fuel filter! GOOD call. We're puttin' a spare CPS in the glove box today, and there's always a spare belt in the "oh crap" tote in the bed. And +1 on sticking with major truck stops for fuel.

Don't forget the socket or 10mm wrench to change that CPS... lol.. That would suck...

If you are very nervous about it do a UOA at the end of the interval to see how the oil did. I doubt you will have any problems, maybe a little shear but so long as wear number don't increase it really doesn't matter. RTS is a very tough oil.

For what it is worth, I ran JD Plus-50 for 13,000 miles and towed a 9500 pound trailer across this country for 11,000 or so of those miles during the summer. I saw temps ranging from 28* in Glacier, MT to 117* in Black Canyon City, AZ. Burned off 1/2 a quart and never had trouble with the engine in my old dodge.

Re: Is 6000 miles pushing it with Rotella-T Syn?

Well, 3200 miles with no incidents. Only about 18 MPG, 3.55s with no load, seems kinda low. But I was doing 70-75 MPH most of the way, hit some fun mountain passes in Tennessee. Thanks for the advice, gang; UOA is def. on the agenda. Who do y'all trust for UOAs these days?
