The transmission will physically bolt in however the newer transmission has a different shift strategy as well as different inputs. So the short answer. No .
Why not get it rebuilt ? There is a lot of aftermarket parts available to make the e4od near bulletproof.
The transmission does not have ANY shift strategy. The shift strategy is located in the computer, not in the transmission.
Back to the OP: There is no 2004 transmission that will bolt into your truck. You must get a transmission from a truck that had a 7.3L diesel. 2003 was the last year of the 7.3L, so no, this transmission will not work. If the 2004 is a diesel it has a 5R110W transmission which will not bolt into your truck. If it is a gas engine truck it has a 4R100, which is similar to your E4OD, but it has a gas engine case, which will not bolt to your truck.
Your best bet is to find an E4OD from a 1989-1997 diesel. You also need to match 4x4 or 4x2, they are not interchangeable.
