Where is my problem located?

So this has happened two times now, I go to start my truck and the ignition just clicks over. My entire ignition assembly is new, so is it my starter relay or starter. Or none of the above and it lies in the wiring?

When this happens I have to use a screwdriver and cross the terminals on the starter relay to crank the truck over.

Re: Where is my problem located?

If the truck cranks when you jump the starter relay, the relay is bad...

Re: Where is my problem located?

Thank you for the input I'll go grab a new relay tomorrow. Now I just have to find the draw that's draining my batteries.

Re: Where is my problem located?

That is good to know, also the two problems are twins as in when the starter relay first started going bad my batteries started to drain. After I get the new relay in today I'll post up my results.

Re: Where is my problem located?

Loose battery cables? If the connection is bad enough it will just click like a dead battery when you turn the key.

Re: Where is my problem located?

I checked my battery cables and snugged them all up just incase. I had previously had a no start from loose battery cables and gave my friend I nice jolt when he wiggled the connection and the key was still on lol.

Re: Where is my problem located?

I changed out my relay tonight, now only time will tell if I eliminated my no start problem and the draw on my batteries. I'll post up what my results are.

Re: Where is my problem located?

Disconnect your negative cable on the pass side battery and hook a multimeter to it with it on the dc amp setting. Put one lead on the negative terminal on the battery and one lead on the negative terminal on the cable and see if you have a substantial amp draw. If you can get your hands on an amp clamp that does dc that would be even easier. Hook it around the positive cable on the pass battery or on the cable from the alternator and see if you are drawing more than a few milliamps.

Re: Where is my problem located?

I will be doing that for sure, I've been reading up on it lately to make sure I can do it correctly. On Monday a friend of mine will be loaning me his multimeter so I can really find my draw. Thank you for the input, your advice pushed me to do it instead of just live with it.
