IDM Failure related to Alternator Failure

Recently found out my IDM was shot, the alternator was found out to be dead too... Could these be related?
Good place to find a IDM??

Re: IDM Failure related to Alternator Failure

I think the common failure for them is water intrusion, but as with any thing electrical, it only takes a quick short, spike etc, to blow something out.

have you opened it up to look inside?

idm's for sale in the classifieds below quite often.

What makes you think your IDM is shot? I don't see how the two are connected, but who knows????

Re: IDM Failure related to Alternator Failure

The only way they could be connected is if the alternator had a massive high voltage spike and burnt out the IDM, however if that were the case anything else that is electrical in your truck would have suffered damage as well. On the flip side though is that if your alternator wasn't putting out enough amps to keep the batteries charged and the voltage got too low then the IDM, PCM, etc would not be able to function and therefore the truck wouldn't run that way either.

Re: IDM Failure related to Alternator Failure

IDM was shot, replaced it with a GB remanufactured model. and the alternator was shot as well.
Not sure if they were connected, but truck starts now and runs better.

Re: IDM Failure related to Alternator Failure

I would say that it was purely coincidental.

Re: IDM Failure related to Alternator Failure

I think this may not be coincidence. I have replaced my IDM twice now within about 50,000km. The second time, the alternator was kaput at exactly the same time...

Expensive!
