7.3 boring ?s

i pulled my motor a few nights ago and tore it down to the short block after a no oil pressure issue (build time, or so i thought) and i can fit my driver license between the cylinder wall and piston EASILY! id say shes rather egg shapped. my question is this... what is the safest you can over bore a 7.3 to handle 350/200s, a stage 1.5 cam and 38r/gt47 compounds with some hot tuning? can it be sleeved to handle it reliably? or should i say eff the sleeving price and find a new block for the same price as sleeving if it cant safely be bored? with the above mentioned mods, it will be beat on. keep that in mind

Re: 7.3 boring ?s

Well I talked to my machinist and he filled me in that the top of the piston is smaller (bigger gap from the walls) than the bottom of the piston for heat expansion. So with that being said I feel more relieved and my motor will be going to him as soon as I pick out my pistons

I would send your block in first, have the machist find out how much needs to be bored out then buy your pistons. 2 dimension checks need to be made, 1 how much over size on the bore do you need to clean up the holes, pistons are available .010-.040. Your block can handle any of these pistons. 2 if the block needs to be decked the piston protrusion above the block needs to be checked, .010 shorter pistons are available to allow for a lower deck. Find out what your block needs before you buy the pistons or make sure they will take them back if you need a different piston size or height.
Good luck on your build.

Re: 7.3 boring ?s

Yeah that's kind of the way I was going to do it. Just gotta have the pistons ready to be sent to me at a moments notice when my machinist gets to my motor. He's backed up about 2.5 months right now but I don't plan on being able to drive my truck till the end of the year at the earliest
