Engine serial # help CPS bad

Ok according to this site if my engine seiral number is higher than 375548, than this is the CPS i need right? Well where the hell is the engine serial number located. the truck was built 04/96 so that would make it a pre 96.5 right? or maybe not because they start producing the 97s half way through the year. But the only thing i see that could even be mistaken for an engine serial number is located right on the bottom right side of the International northstar sticker on my pass side valve cover, it reads 1824368 then has a C1 after it. Does this sound right?

One place for the serial number will be a piece of paper on the front of the HPOP unless yours has came off. The other spot is above the oil filter header where it is stamped in the block.

But I would bet that yours is the older CPS. My truck was built in June of 96 and has the older CPS in it.

I found a number on the harmonic balancer too it was 181xxx I only remember the 181 part. Also there is a 181xxxC2 number on the oil cooler mount itself.

Any of the CPS's will work in any of the 7.3 powerstrokes. To do it 100% correctly you should have the depth gauge tool to determine the seating of the cps. Most if not all of us just buy a new old black style or one from International and bypass the new gray crap one from Ford and carry on. It is a part that fails often and you should keep one in your vehicle as a spare because they always go when you are in the worst possible place for it to happen.

There are little metal "washers" so to speak that go on the cps in order for it to be set at the correct depth. The only place I have ever seen the tool for measuring the depth is at International. The new "gray" cps from Ford is notorious for giving false readings during cct as well as poor idle and a few other issues.

Re: Engine serial # help CPS bad

The serial number will be stamped on the block itself along with a large piece of paper that is on the HPOP if it hasn't been worn off.
As far as them going out quite regularity my truck has 150,000 on the original CPS with a spare sitting in the glove box for the last 120,000 miles. I'm not saying that they don't go out but the problems were with the newer ones or 96.5+ years and that was what the recall was for.
