Decreased power

My 97 350 7.3 has, when cold, intermittent reduced power and an loud air vacumn type sound from exhaust. Step on gas it goes away immediately. Is the turbo going? Any ideas? Thanks

Re: Decreased power

Exhaust Back Pressure Valve is closing. You can delete it with a new turbo pedestal or unplug it. Plug is underneath the compressor housing. If you unplug it, make sure the valve is open.

Re: Decreased power

You can also wire it open when you unplug it if you have any worries about it closing.

Mak270, welcome to PSN. To follow up on the above comments. No your turbo is not going out. Your 7.3 has what is called and exhaust back pressure valve on it (EBPV) from the factory it is located just after the exhaust side on the turbo and before the exhaust down pipe, passenger side rear of block. The power control module, monitors oil and antifreeze temps and when cold activates the EBPV, which is a butterfly valve in the exhaust flow. When it comes on that’s the sound you hear. The notion is that it will heat up the engine faster than without one. Many guys unplug them and or gutt the EBPV right out. This valve is activated with engine oil pressure and over time, leaks will usually start to happen in a couple of areas. To learn more do a search on gutting the EBPV.
cheers,
