Just got a 97

Hey all, First Post here.

Just picked up a 1997 250. Extended cab, 4x2, with the 5 Speed Manual. Had 354xxx on it, and a dent in the passenger side door. Little spots of rust on top of the cab, but its not bad and will be easily repaired. All in all I am happy with it, for $2200.

First night I had it, I left it unplugged and it got down to 28 (North Carolina). I expected a hard start as the seller had told me that the Glow Plus would need to be replaced soon. I went out to find it acting like dead batteries/ Starter dragging. So I plugged it in, and got a jump...Fired up no issues. Ordered Motorcraft GP's, Starter, replaced the Altenator and Serpentine belt because that was starting to fray. Trying to get some red top Optima batteries for it too. May have to wait until after Christmas.

When driving, it is sometimes hard to get into gear, so I checked the Brake/Clutch pedal assembly, found a broken bushing and ordered a new one of those too. While I was at it, I also ordered a clutch Master/Slave Cylinder (No bleed) assembly. Once all that is on, I am pretty sure that it will feel like a brand new truck! Fairly excited!

Anyone have any reccomendations? I will post pictures as soon as I can.

(Also if anyone has a how to on replacing GP's, please link it in a comment. I can turn a wrench, and follow directions, and call my dad for a talk through if need be, but I am no mechanic!)

Look forward to learning from everyone!!!

Re: Just got a 97

Welcome!

GPs are fairly simple. Just need to get the valvecovers off. The back bolts can be a pain sometimes. Do a very thorough inspection of the valvecover gasket harness connection (both internal and external) for evidence of melting and burning. Buy a 1/4" drive, 10mm deepwell socket for using on the glowplugs (use only OEM Motorcraft/Beru ZD-11 plugs only).

To check the glowplug relay (GPR which can be the source of issues), measure the voltage drop across the GPR's large terminals. While the GPR is active (up to 1.5 to 2 minutes after the key is turned to Wait-to-Start) put your meter leads on the large terminals (one lead on one large terminal and the other lead on the other large terminal). The measures how much voltage is being "lost" across the relay. A reading of 0.3V or more indicates a bad relay. Also, check the relay’s control wires (smaller wires) disconnected from the relay for battery voltage at the Red/Light Green striped wire and ground at the Purple/Orange striped wire (check both when the key is turned to Wait-to-Start).

Cheers!
